Avoid common mistakes during high-temperature charging: A complete guide to stop your forklift charger from overheating.

Scorching summer heat sweeps across the nation, putting electric forklifts under greater operational strain.

The charger is a vital accessory for electric forklifts. Improper charging procedures and neglected daily maintenance will directly impair vehicle safety and shorten service life.

Andep has specially put together this heat prevention guide for chargers. It helps you charge in a standardized way and guarantee safe round-the-clock forklift operation.

Ideal Charging Conditions

Forklift charging stations shall be kept away from high-temperature heat sources including engines, boilers and ovens. Charging outdoors under direct sunlight or in airtight small storage rooms is strictly prohibited. Prioritize cool, dry and well-ventilated areas for charging work.

TIPS: Reserve ventilation space around the charger. Do not block air inlets and outlets with cartons, cables or sundries. Keep the power cords on both ends of the charger suspended and exposed without any coverings to ensure smooth heat dissipation circulation.

Charge the forklift after it cools down

After long-hour heavy-load operation, the forklift battery temperature will rise. It is recommended to let it stand and cool down for 15 to 30 minutes before charging.
TIPS: The standard charging temperature for lithium batteries is around 25°C (±5°C), and the maximum temperature shall not exceed 45°C. Excessively high charging temperature will decompose the electrolyte of lithium batteries, resulting in loss of active lithium, and degrade battery performance & cycle life.

Regular Dust Removal for Effective Heat Dissipation Maintenance

Regularly clear dust and debris accumulated on the heat dissipation vents and fans of the charger to ensure unobstructed heat dissipation.

TIPS: Use a dry soft cloth to wipe surface dust off the charger during cleaning. For the dust screens and ventilation openings on both sides of the charger, clean them with a soft brush or air gun. Never clean with water.

Regular Inspection of Wiring Safety

High temperatures accelerate cable aging and wear. Inspect the charger wiring regularly, focusing on issues such as damaged insulation, exposed copper, softening and deformation.

TIPS: Stop charging immediately and replace the cable if cracks, damage or exposed copper cores are found to eliminate potential electrical hazards.

Conduct Regular Inspections During Charging

It is recommended to check the unit temperature, fan operation and abnormal odors every 1 to 2 hours during charging.

TIPS: If the forklift battery overheats, emits strange odors or bulges, or the charger frequently starts and stops abnormally during charging, cut off all power supply at once. Move the forklift to an open and well-ventilated area for cooling, then troubleshoot issues such as short-circuited batteries or abnormal charger parameters one by one.

Opt for Intelligent Chargers

It is recommended to use intelligent chargers for charging. They can not only shorten the charging time of forklifts, but also avoid faults such as overcharging and overheating via the intelligent control system, providing long-term protection for the safety of batteries and the whole vehicle during charging.
